Free Admission to National Parks for Military

In recognition of Veterans Day, the National Park Service created a program that allows currently serving military members, Gold Star Families, and veterans to gain free access to more than 2,000 federal recreation areas.  These recreation areas include national parks and wildlife refuges, and forests.  This benefit will save you $80 over the standard annual pass when purchased on-site or at the U.S. Geological Survey store.

The free admission program is their means to thank America’s veterans, Gold Star Families, and current military for their support of the country and encourage them to explore recreational opportunities on public lands and waters.  So if you’re an outdoor enthusiast, an avid hiker, or want to explore the beauty of America’s National Parks, there is a great vacation that is perfect for you and your family.

The National Parks service will determine eligibility by seeking a valid DoD Common Access Card for current members of the U.S. military or a copy of D.D. Form 1173 for dependents of current military members pursuing their pass.  Gold Star Family members must self-certify by applying for the Military Pass online at the USGS Store.

NPS Military Pass

The annual military pass covers the entrance fees at the national park and any standard amenity fees at the parks or lands managed by the Bureau of Land Management, Bureau of Reclamation, and U.S. Army Corps Engineers.

A pass includes the entrance fee, standard amenity fees, and day-use fees for the drive and all passengers in a personal vehicle up to four adults.  Children under the age of 15 will always get in for free.

The entrance fee waiver does not cover expanded amenity or user fees for activities such as camping, transportation, special recreation permits, reservation fees, or special tours. The pass can be obtained free in person at sites that issue passes, but you can also purchase the pass through the USGS store. However, there is a $10 online processing fee.

It’s essential to obtain the annual Interagency Military Pass and display it on the dashboard at unstaffed sites. At national park sites that do not issue yearly military passes, showing an eligible form of ID will allow free entrance.

BOTTOM LINE

Save yourself and your family/traveling companions at least $80 by bringing your CAC with you on your next vacation to one of America’s National Parks. This program is a great deal that has saved me a lot of money on lengthy multi-day hiking trips and trips to the local campground for a family or friendly barbecue.
