The Beginner’s Guide to Hilton Honors Program

Hilton Featured Pic

Hilton is one of the largest and most recognizable global hotel brands in the world. More than 6,500 Hilton properties across 18 brands in 119 countries participate in the Hilton Honors rewards program.

Hilton’s loyalty program offers excellent perks, especially at the top status level, easily attainable via their Hilton Aspire Credit Card, annual fees waived for active-duty military members. Diamond members receive noticeable benefits like Executive Lounge access, complimentary upgrades, and free breakfast for you and a guest. Additionally, points are easy to accrue with solid earning rates with the Hilton Aspire credit card and a significant return on Hilton spending.

In this guide, we’ll cover how to earn Hilton Honors redemption basics, how much free nights cost, how to book an award night, and some military considerations.

Hilton Honors Redemption Basics

While Hilton Honors points can be used in various ways from free rental cars, Amazon shopping, rides with Lyft, they often don’t hold the same value as using them for free hotel nights. This reason is why we only recommend using them for free room nights or a combination of points and money.

Unfortunately, Hilton no longer publishes an award chart and has moved to dynamic pricing. That means award prices will vary similar to the cash price of the hotel room. If you are looking for a room at a Hampton Inn in rural Tennessee, the points needed will typically be far less than a room at the Waldorf Astoria in Los Angeles.

An excellent way for guests to use their Hilton Honors points is through Hilton’s Points & Money system. This system allows you to choose how many points you want per night on a room, starting at 5,000 points and increasing in 1,000 point increments. So, if you are short on points for a specific redemption, you can use some of your points and pay the remainder in cash.

For example, I had a friend that needed a room after landing late at night in Chicago. So instead of driving 5 hours into Illinois, they decided to get a hotel room. But they didn’t have enough points to receive a free night but could utilize the Points & Money system to use the points they did have and pay in cash for the rest. So they ended up paying $18 in total for the night instead of the $135 the hotel wanted initially.

How Much Free Nights Cost?

Hilton Honors free nights start at 5,000 points but often require more than that. While Hilton has moved to a dynamically priced award program, most standard room awards cost between 5,000 and 95,000 points per night. However, there are a few exceptions for ultra-luxury properties in the Maldives and other locations, beginning at 120,000 points per night.
An excellent way to figure out the price range for standard rooms is through Hilton’s Points Explorer tool, filtered by location, price, and hotel brand.

Point Explorer Tool

Hilton’s Points Explorer tool is useful when you are starting to plan for a trip and want to get an idea of how many points you’ll need for redemption in a particular area or with a specific brand. However, the tool will only show you the historical data for the details you filtered. It does not, however, show you the current points redemption. Therefore, you will want to check the current points redemption when you are ready to book the exact free night award Hilton asks for.

I would generally recommend that if you plan a stay of 5 nights or longer at a location, look to book at a Hilton as they reward their elite members by making every fifth night free on award stays. So, for example, if you booked a five-night stay where each night cost 50,000 points, you would only pay 200,000 points instead of 250,000.

• 50K + 50K + 50K + 50K + 50K = 250,000 points
• 250,000 / 5 nights = 50,000 points per night
• 250,000 – 50,000 = 200,000
• Total point cost: 200,000 points

How to Book An Award Night

To book a Hilton award night, you’ll need to do so either on the Hilton app or online at Hilton.com. You will need a Hilton Honors membership and log into your account to select the room and rate at a particular hotel.

Check the “Use Points” box under the “Special Rates” option box to search for award rates. Then, enter your destination and your intended dates and click the “Find a Hotel” button.

Use Points

If you don’t have specific dates you are interested in, you can use the “Flexible Date” search and view the entire months’ reward rates at a time. The flexible date search is excellent for searching for the lowest awards available if you have a little more flexibility in your schedule. Click the “Flexible Date” box then “View Available Dates” on your intended hotel. You’ll see a calendar month view of how much a stay for your chosen length would cost per night, starting with your check-in date.

Hilton Honors Military Benefits

Hilton offers a military hotel discount at most participating locations. Veterans, active-duty armed service members, and their families can save 10% on leisure stays. To search for rooms that have this discount, check the box titled “Government/Military Rates.”

It is best to check other special offer codes when booking as the military rate is not always the lowest. In my experience, the member rate is often lower than any other offer code available. All that is required to get the member rate is to sign up for Hilton’s free loyalty program.

Perhaps the best military benefit Hilton offers is actually from American Express. The Hilton Honors Aspire card provides you instant top-tier Diamond status. Most importantly, the $450 annual fee for active-duty military members and spouses will be waived.
