The Beginner’s Guide to the World of Hyatt

Hyatt Hotel

The World of Hyatt rewards program has one of the most attractive award charts and the most sought-after top-tier elite status among the major hotel loyalty programs.  World of Hyatt points can give you tremendous value when you’re looking for your next free hotel room.

Stays at Hyatt hotels earn points and rewards that can be redeemed for free nights and allow for more luxurious options while staying at a Hyatt hotel. These include suite upgrades, complimentary breakfast, free parking on award stays, and no resort fees.  The different hotel brands in the Hyatt portfolio mean whether you are looking for a relaxing family beach vacation with extra room for a kitchen or a romantic getaway resort, the World of Hyatt program is a top choice.

World of Hyatt is one of the best Chase Ultimate Rewards hotel transfer partners. You can transfer your Ultimate Rewards points to World of Hyatt at a 1:1 ratio, but you must have the Chase Sapphire Preferred or Chase Sapphire Reserve Card to transfer points. Nevertheless, transferring your Ultimate Rewards points is a fantastic and straightforward way to accrue Hyatt points for a free night.

World of Hyatt Redemption Basics

Hyatt allows you to redeem your World of Hyatt points in several ways to include room upgrades, paying for in-room movies, parking, transportation, and dining and spa experiences at participating locations.  However, the best value for your points will be redeeming those points for free nights at hotels.  Using your points for a free night in order to stay at an airport or for an all-inclusive stay in Mexico or the Caribbean is typically the best use of your hard-earned points.

How Much Free Nights Cost?

Getting a free night at a Hyatt is very simple. Hyatt places every one of its hotels into one of each category. Each category will cost different points depending on the category number and whether it’s off-peak or peak season for that particular hotel.  Essentially, the higher end or more desirable hotels, the more points the hotel will require to obtain a free night.

Hyatt reward nights start at just 3,500 points for off-peak category 1 hotels and increase to 35,000 points per night at category 8 hotels.  Take a look at the award chart below for off-peak, standard, and peak award points needed for a free night.

If you don’t yet have enough points for a free night, you can also use a combination of points plus cash to pay for the room.  This essentially lowers the cash rate and the number of points needed by 50 percent. See the chart below for a better idea of the number of points required for each hotel category.

Lastly, you can upgrade your room with as few as 3,000 points on paid nights, but if you are looking for a suite or premium suite, it will cost you 6,000 and 9,000 points, respectively.  To upgrade your room, you’ll also have to call Hyatt at 1-800-544-9288.

World of Hyatt Award Availability

Hyatt usually makes free nights available when they have rooms to sell at a cash rate.  If a standard room isn’t available, you may be able to book a different type of room such as a club room, a suite, or a points + cash booking.  These options will be displayed when looking at the booking screen.    To search for Hyatt rewards nights, head to hyatt.com and select the “Use Points” checkbox when you search.

Then sign in to your World of Hyatt account and click the “book” button next to the room available with points you wish to book. Of course, you’ll still need a credit card for incidentals to confirm the reservation.  After which, you now have a free room for the length of your trip.

World of Hyatt Military Benefits

Veterans, active-duty armed service members, and their immediate family members can save 10-15% off stays at participating Hyatt hotels and resorts within the United States.  This offer is available for immediate family members as well.  When booking, you must use the offer code MILVET and present a valid U.S. Military/Veteran ID or a DD-214 at check-in.

When booking, it is best to check other special offer codes as the military rate is not always the lowest.  In my experience, the member rate is often lower than any other offer code available.  All that is required to get the member rate is to sign up for Hyatt’s free loyalty program.

Bottom Line

World of Hyatt is my absolute favorite hotel loyalty program.  Even as a low-level status member, the attention to customer service is unrivaled compared to the other hotels’ other significant points. In addition, the World of Hyatt card, fee waived for active-duty service members, makes status easily attainable and higher status even within reach with a bit of effort.

The sole drawback to having Hyatt as your primary hotel destination is its smaller properties than its competitors. In addition, Hyatts can be difficult to find near central military installations and, therefore, difficult to build status through stays.  However, Hyatts are in most major cities, so keep looking for a Hyatt when going TDY.  Hyatt is continuing to expand its presence and continues to be more accessible.  Hyatt is one program you want to keep on your radar.
